MSc in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering
The Master Degree in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering trains engineers with a solid multidisciplinary background for the quantitative analysis of environmental phenomena and the design of interventions aimed at solving the challenges posed by man's interaction with the environment. The program focuses on the interaction between human activities, the environment, and the land within a sustainable development framework. The course embraces a One Health approach, highlighting the link between environmental quality, human well-being, and the resilience of territorial systems.
Graduates play an active role in protecting the environment, safeguarding public health, and ensuring the land’s safety, being professionals capable of understanding complex environmental systems and designing advanced interventions to tackle contemporary environmental challenges, working in multidisciplinary contexts and at multiple scales. The curriculum prepares students for technical roles and decision-support activities in both public and private sectors, opening up broad and diverse professional prospects.
Admission to the program is open to students holding a Bachelor’s Degree or an equivalent qualification, with adequate preparation in fundamental and core engineering disciplines.
Graduates in Engineering from Politecnico di Milano: admission is regulated according to criteria defined in the Academic Regulations, based on the student’s educational background and curricular requirements.
Graduates in Engineering from other Italian universities: admission requires verification of curricular requirements and individual academic preparation.
Full details regarding admission requirements are provided in Section 6 of the Academic Regulations of the Programme
Applicants holding a foreign academic qualification equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree may apply, provided they have an adequate background in fundamental engineering subjects and disciplines relevant to Environmental and Land Planning Engineering.
Admission is subject to an Eligibility evaluation of the applicant’s previous academic career, carried out according to the procedures and criteria established by Politecnico di Milano.
The program provides in-depth study of some theoretical tools (mathematics, statistics, computer science) and advanced tools for analyzing and modeling environmental and territorial phenomena, with a strong focus on real-world applications. Students develop skills to design sustainable solutions for land and natural resources management, mitigation of the effects of natural events and pollution, environmental remediation and risk reduction, and environmental quality improvement, integrating engineering, scientific, and computational knowledge.
The course offers several specialized study tracks, allowing students to deepen their expertise in specific areas of environmental engineering. This structure ensures flexibility and enables students to build a training profile tailored to their interests and career goals.
A fully English-taught track is available (Environmental Engineering for Sustainability). Four other tracks include some courses taught in Italian, but the study plan’s customization allows students to have fully English teaching as well (Land Protection and Natural Hazard Prevention, Natural Resources Planning and Management, Environmental Protection and Remediation Technologies, Environmental Monitoring and Diagnostics).

Graduates in Environmental and Land Planning Engineering hold advanced skills that enable employment in highly qualified professional environments or continuation towards the academic career.
As professionals, Graduates are capable of addressing complex environmental challenges, contributing to the planning, design, and management of interventions to protect the environment and the land. They can work in both public and private contexts, applying advanced technical skills, analytical abilities, and decision-support expertise.
Professional opportunities include engineering and consulting firms, research and innovation activities. The course also opens opportunities in organizations, authorities, and NGOs involved in planning, monitoring, and managing environmental and territorial systems.
The master’s program also provides a solid foundation for professional practice; passing the State Exam allows graduates to register with the professional Engineers’ Association and officially work as licensed engineers.
After graduation, students may enroll in second-level university Master’s programs or in PhD programs.
