BSc in Building and Construction Engineering
Designing, refurbishing and regenerating buildings, with the pragmatism and effectiveness characteristic of an engineering approach, for the wellbeing of the people who live, work, study and enjoy themselves within them, is the fundamental objective of building engineering studies.
The Building Engineer is a comprehensive technical professional, capable of integrating structures, systems, materials, safety and comfort, with particular attention to environmental sustainability and innovation. This professional oversees the building throughout all its stages, from design to construction and through to management, operating in a constantly evolving sector.
Upon completion of the programme, graduates qualify as Building Engineers with solid scientific and technical foundations, ready to enter the workforce or to pursue further study.
The degree programme is structured over three years and covers a range of scientific and technical knowledge required to understand and manage the various stages of a building’s life cycle. Initially, students acquire the foundations of engineering through subjects such as mathematics, physics and structural science.
Subsequently, the course focuses on the technical and applied aspects specific to building and construction engineering, including project engineering, materials technology, structural design, site safety, construction process management and systems integration. Particular emphasis is placed on digital modelling, Building Information Modelling, and environmental sustainability, in order to address contemporary challenges such as low energy buildings and smart buildings.
Teaching activities include lectures, tutorials and numerous design laboratories aimed at encouraging teamwork. These activities develop practical skills and problem solving abilities, preparing students to analyse real cases and to design effective engineering solutions.
After graduation you may sit the State Examination in order to qualify as a Junior Engineer. You may work in engineering firms, design practices, construction companies, materials manufacturing companies, consultancy firms or public authorities. Professional activities may include design, site supervision, site management, consultancy or quality control. Alternatively, you may continue your studies with a Master’s degree to further develop your expertise and gain access to roles with greater responsibility.
The IEC degree provides direct access, without additional requirements, to the Politecnico di Milano Master of Science programmes in Building Engineering for Sustainability (BES - Milan), Architectural Engineering (AE - Lecco), and Management of Built Environment (MBE - Milan).
