CO2 Emissions Mitigation Plan

The Politecnico di Milano confirms its commitment to combatting climate change with the update of its CO2 Emissions Mitigation Plan (PdM Light 2025). The document is designed to be an update of the previous PdM 2024, pending the issue of the third edition, which is scheduled for 2026. To ensure the timing was in alignment with the University's Strategic Plans (2023-2025; 2026-2028), it was decided to issue a simplified update in the intermediate years (2025 and 2027), to be known as the "light version".

The Politecnico di Milano's CO2 Emissions Mitigation Plan (PdM Light, 2025)

The Plan was approved by the Academic Senate in November 2025, and confirms the University's ambitious goals, set out in the Strategic Sustainability Plan 2023-2025: to reduce per capita emissions by 25% by 2025, by 50% by 2030, until reaching the Net Zero target in 2040, relative to 2015.

The PdM Light 2025 takes account of the data in the University's CO2 Emissions Inventories, available up to 2024, and examines the progress of the mitigation activities outlined in the previous Plan (PdM, 2024) for the Energy and Transport Sectors, checking the degree to which these remain consistent with the target path for reducing CO2 emissions, formally accepted by the University.

The document provides a general picture of those interventions set out in the previous Plan that have produced tangible results, those that could yield results over time, and those whose outcomes have differed from expectations. It provides a firm scientific basis for monitoring progress, and for helping the University's governing bodies to define future policies and strategies for sustainable development, over both the short and long term.

The Politecnico has been involved in many institutional and educational activities over the years, as well as research work and technological development, and the drafting of this Plan required collaboration between a number of university structures. It represents a real contribution by the Politecnico to the global efforts to mitigate climate change, as well as another step towards the creation of a "Sustainable Campus".
