Cingomma

Reusing bicycle tires and inner tubes

As part of the Città Studi Sustainable Campus project—created to test models to promote quality of life and environmental sustainability through the active contribution of the university community and neighborhood residents—and the VENTO Project, the Politecnico di Milano has launched a collaboration with Cingomma, the brand produced and distributed by Recrea srl.
Recrea srl is a company of Italian artisans that handcrafts high-quality fashion accessories from used bicycle tires and inner tubes. This is a concrete example of the circular economy.

The Politecnico—long committed to promoting good environmental sustainability practices—in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda, is making some of its spaces available to enable the implementation of experimental projects for the collection, reuse, and recycling of materials.
As part of this new project, the reference Goal is no. 12 – Responsible Production and Consumption – allowing the placement of special containers throughout the university for the collection of used bicycle inner tubes and tires. The experimental project also aims to help spread the principles of the circular economy, raising awareness among the polytechnic community and citizens of the increasingly important issue of waste prevention. The University has also launched a new Green Collection as part of its merchandising activities to contribute to the dissemination of a culture of sustainability. The creations created by Cingomma as part of this initiative, such as some belt models, will also be available in the Politecnico's Official Merchandise catalog.

Where are the containers located?

The bins are located in multiple locations on the Politecnico's two Milanese campuses, Leonardo and Bovisa.
On the Milan Leonardo campus, there are two: the first outside the reception area of Building 11, and the second next to the Velostazione (near Building 5).
On the Bovisa campus, the bins are located at the reception area of Building B12 on the La Masa Campus, while on the Candiani campus, they are located at LabAllestimenti, Building B2, and at the Policiclo headquarters, Building B6. An additional bin is available to the DAStU – VENTO Project and the Environmental Sustainability Service for projects and events dedicated to the circular economy.

The VENTO project

This project, launched as part of the research activities of the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies at the Politecnico di Milano, involves a cycle tourism route running for over 700 km along the banks of the Po River. Its goal is to regenerate the areas involved by promoting recovery, employment, identity, dignity, sociality, and urbanity. As part of the VENTO project, experimental campaigns for the recovery of used tires and inner tubes have already been launched, to promote the circular economy, in collaboration with Cingomma.
